Turkey Size Calculator
Data reviewed ·how we calculate
Turkey sizing has the best-sourced rule in all of party planning: one pound of whole bird per guest, or a pound and a half if leftovers are the actual point of the holiday — figures published by USDA-backed food-safety guidance and every major producer. The pound-per-guest rate sounds huge until you subtract bone and carcass, which claim roughly half the bird. This calculator turns your table into a target bird weight, counts kids at half, and tells you when two medium birds beat one monster.
Holiday quantities are planning guidance, not rules — crowds, traditions and leftover appetites vary. Check the last-reviewed date above and adjust for your own table. Last updated: 2026-07-04.

How to work it out step by step
Count effective guests — adults plus half per kid. Example: 10 adults + 4 kids = 12 effective guests.
Multiply by the rate you chose: with leftovers as the goal, 12 × 1.5 lb = an 18 lb bird. Meal-only planning gives 12 lb.
Apply the two-birds rule: totals above about 20 lb roast better as two smaller turkeys — a 24 lb answer means two 12-pounders, not one giant.
Work the thaw backwards from dinner: a frozen 18 lb bird needs about 4 days in the refrigerator (24 h per 4–5 lb, per USDA FSIS) — the step more holiday dinners miss than any quantity math.
Host tips
- A breast-only roast (about ¾ lb per guest, bone-in) suits small tables that only like white meat better than a whole small bird.
- Two 12 lb birds beat one 24-pounder three ways: shorter cook, more drumsticks, and one can be smoked or fried while the other roasts.
- Refrigerate all leftovers within two hours of serving (USDA); the 1.5 lb rate assumes those sandwiches survive to Friday.
The data behind this calculator
| Serving figure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Whole turkey per guest | 1 lb (meal only) · 1.5 lb (leftovers) | USDA FoodSafety.gov holiday guidance; Butterball purchasing guidance |
| Edible yield of a whole bird | ≈ 50% — bone and carcass take the rest | Poultry yield convention (USDA poultry yield data) — estimate |
| Two-birds threshold | Above ≈ 20 lb, two smaller birds cook faster and more evenly | Butterball/extension roasting guidance — convention |
| Refrigerator thawing time | ≈ 24 hours per 4–5 lb of bird | USDA FSIS turkey thawing guidance |
| Safe temperature | 165°F in the innermost thigh, wing and thickest breast | USDA FSIS safe minimum internal temperature |
Leftover buffer (0% default):The buffer defaults to 0 because leftover appetite is already built into the rate you pick above — add a buffer only if your birds tend to arrive smaller than their label.
Cost basis ($1–$4per lb of whole turkey):Frozen store-brand birds (often loss-leadered near the holiday) sit at the low end; fresh, organic and heritage birds at 2–4× that. Estimate only.Source: US grocery retail range, 2025–2026 (estimate — verify locally).
Thanksgiving turkey questions, answered
What size turkey do I need for 14 people?
For 10 adults and 4 kids the calculator counts 12 effective guests. Planning for leftovers at 1.5 lb per guest, that is an 18 lb (8.2 kg) bird; for the meal alone at 1 lb per guest, a 12-pounder does it. Both figures follow USDA and Butterball purchasing guidance.
Why a whole pound per person — surely nobody eats a pound of turkey?
Nobody does: roughly half a whole bird’s weight is bone and carcass, so 1 lb of raw whole turkey delivers about 8 oz of cooked meat, of which a typical dinner plate takes 5–6 oz. The rest is the margin that becomes sandwiches — which is why the leftover-lovers’ rate is 1.5 lb.
When should I buy two turkeys instead of one big one?
Above about 20 lb. Giant birds roast unevenly — the breast dries while the thighs catch up — and thaw times stretch toward a week. Two 12 lb birds cook in a normal oven window, double the prized drumsticks, and let you run two preparations. Same total weight, better dinner.
How long does it take to thaw a frozen turkey?
USDA FSIS guidance is about 24 hours of refrigerator thawing per 4–5 lb: an 18 lb bird needs roughly four days in the fridge. The cold-water method runs about 30 minutes per pound with water changes every half hour. No counter thawing — the outside spends hours in the danger zone while the core stays frozen.
Does the pound-per-person rule cover a whole Thanksgiving dinner?
It covers the turkey only. Stuffing, potatoes, vegetables and the rest are what actually fill people — size those with the side dishes calculator (holiday tables run heavy) and the math stays honest on both fronts.
